At present, four kinds of advanced rib drill pipe materials include carbon fiber-epoxy resin-based composite materials, titanium alloy, aluminum alloy and super-strength steel. The rib drill pipe of these materials has its advantages and disadvantages in ERD, UDD and deep water drilling. Composite rib drill pipe is made by winding carbon fiber on a reel and then applying an epoxy-based composite material to cover and seal it. In order to obtain the necessary structural characteristics, the wall thickness of the composite rib drill pipe may be up to twice the wall thickness of the regular steel rib drill pipe. This will significantly reduce the inner diameter of the pipe, resulting in unacceptable pressure loss in the rib drill pipe. Due to the importance of hydraulic efficiency, composites generally do not provide a viable solution for UDD and ERD.
