Why is it called Ghost Festival?
Every year, the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar is the Zhongyuan Festival in our country. Compared with other festivals, this festival has more horrible colors, because people in the folk also call the Zhongyuan Festival the Ghost Festival. The Chinese Yuan Festival is also called Ghost Festival, July and a half, and a few areas are also called Dead Man Festival. It is one of the three ancient festivals. On the 15th of the first month, the Lantern Festival celebrates the first month. On the 15th of July, the Chinese Yuan Festival is a sacrifice to ancestors.
The Yuan Festival on October 15 is also the Cold Food Festival, which commemorates the Zhongyuan Festival on July 15 of the ancient sages every year. It is a traditional festival for the main sacrifice in our country. It and the cold food festival, Qingming Festival called the three ancient Chinese ghost festival.
The Traditional Customs of the Zhongyuan Festival
Every year, sacrificial activities are mainly held on July 15 of the lunar calendar, but the time is not fixed. In the southern part of our country, people also have the tradition of offering sacrifices on July 14. There are also some places where ancestor worship rituals have been started since the beginning of July, bringing ancestors home at night, and then offering three tea meals a day until the end of July.
According to legend, on the first day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the ghost gate is wide open, and Yan Luowang chartered that the ghosts of the underworld would return to the sun to receive sacrifices from future generations, while the ghosts of the lonely souls who had no one to sacrifice would float around the world in search of food. Folk belief ancestral worship, believe that during the Chinese Yuan Festival ancestors will return to the home of the sun to visit future generations. Therefore, the folk will worship the ancestors and transcend the dead during the Zhongyuan Festival.
Who is the Chinese Yuan Festival to commemorate?
The Ghost Festival originates from the story of Mu Lian saving her mother: "The monk who has Mu Lian has great power. Her mother degenerates in the path of hungry ghosts, and the food entrance turns into flames, which makes her hungry and bitter. Mu Lian can't save her mother, so she asked the Buddha to teach her to be a Bon on July 15 to save her mother in order to say the Bon Sutra."
