Inertia friction welding has been studied for decades and is a solid-state combination without melting process. Because of the unique skill superiority and economic benefits of inertia friction welding, coupled with modern monitoring skills and computer skills and the supporting use of microcomputers, this process has been widely used in foreign countries. The quality of oil grooved drill pipe largely depends on the welding quality of the grooved drill pipe. In the early 1970 s, pressurized gas welding and bright butt welding were used in the revision of old grooved drill pipes and the production of new grooved drill pipes. However, the welding process parameters of these two welding methods are not easy to control, and they are easy to be welded due to granular or block oxides and silicon.

The quality of oil grooved drill pipe largely depends on the welding quality of the grooved drill pipe. In the early 1970 s, pressurized gas welding and bright butt welding skills were used in the correction of old grooved drill pipes and the production of new grooved drill pipes. However, the welding process parameters of these two welding methods are not easy to control, and it is easy to cause granular or block oxides and silicate non-metallic inclusions to remain in the welding seam at the welding site, thus forming a fatal shallow and flat pit-like gray spot defect. The use of butt-welding grooved drill pipe with the defect of gray spot can easily lead to brittle fracture in the early stage, which is far from satisfying the drilling requirements, so these two welding methods are gradually screened.
Later, in order to satisfy the requirements of drilling skills for grooved drill pipes, a new grooved drill pipe production skill-friction welding process was studied. This welding method has a short heating time, a narrow heat-affected zone (both ends of the weld are not more than 20mm), and the welding pressure top can squeeze out harmful inclusion particles in the weld, which greatly improves the welding quality of grooved drill pipes and avoids various harmful welding defects that are easy to occur in welding methods such as bright welding. With the continuous improvement and perfection of friction welding process and the procedure and automation of welding parameter control, the welding quality is further improved steadily, and the production efficiency is high and the cost is low. Today, the friction welding process is dominant in the slotted drill pipe production process.
Among the grooved drill pipe components, the grooved drill pipe body has the most messy processing technology and the highest skill content. Its production process is as follows: converter or electric furnace steelmaking → refining outside the furnace → continuous casting of tube billet → tube billet inspection → tube billet circulating furnace heating → tube billet perforation → sizing → continuous rolling → reheating → tension reducing → straightening → external appearance inspection → cutting head cutting and sizing → internal and external table and scale inspection → pipe end thickening → pipe end grinding and inspection → tempering heat treatment → thermal straightening → sampling mechanical function analysis → longitudinal and transverse NDT and external appearance defects inspection.
The joint quality of domestic grooving drill pipe has reached the foreign level. Through the application of advanced inertial friction butt welding skills and welding technology, the weld function has been stable. If high-quality grooving drill pipe body is used, the whole function of domestic grooving drill pipe can fully reach the function of imported grooving drill pipe.
